Full Description
Our tour begins at the Gower Memorial, where statues of Shakespeare’s famous characters introduce us to the world of the greatest playwright in the English language. From here we walk along the River Avon towards the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, home of the world-famous Royal Shakespeare Company, and continue to Holy Trinity Church, one of the oldest buildings in Stratford and the burial place of William Shakespeare.
We then follow the historic Old Town, passing Hall’s Croft, the former home of Shakespeare’s daughter Susannah and her husband Dr John Hall, before reaching the medieval Guildhall and King Edward VI Grammar School, where Shakespeare is believed to have studied as a boy.
The route continues through the High Street, where we see New Place Gardens, the site of Shakespeare’s final home, Harvard House, and several timber-framed buildings that preserve the character of the Elizabethan town. The walking tour finishes at Shakespeare’s Birthplace, the house where he was born in 1564.
Please note that official guiding inside Shakespeare Birthplace Trust properties is restricted, therefore commentary for Shakespeare’s Birthplace, New Place, and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage will be given outside the sites before your visit.
After the walking tour we travel by vehicle to the nearby village of Shottery, about three miles from the town centre, to see Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, the childhood home of Shakespeare’s wife. This beautiful thatched farmhouse is one of the most romantic historic houses in England and completes the story of Shakespeare’s family life.
Lunch can be arranged at the historic Garrick Pub, located in the centre of Stratford, or at another traditional restaurant depending on your schedule.
For guests wishing to extend the day, the itinerary can also include visits to Cotswolds villages, Bladon (the burial place of Sir Winston Churchill), or Warwick Castle, one of the finest medieval castles in England.
The walking direction of the tour can be reversed if required, depending on parking, timing, or group preferences.
