Full Description
I will meet you at your hotel in London and we will begin our journey westwards into the English countryside for a full-day private tour combining Stonehenge and Oxford, two places that represent very different but equally important parts of English history.
Our first destination is Stonehenge, one of the most famous prehistoric monuments in the world. Built more than four thousand years ago, this mysterious circle of stones continues to fascinate historians, archaeologists, and visitors alike.
During our visit I will explain the different theories about its construction, its ceremonial use, and its importance in the ancient landscape of Wessex.
After exploring Stonehenge, we continue to Oxford, the oldest university city in the English-speaking world. Oxford has been a centre of learning for nearly a thousand years and has educated kings, scientists, writers, and prime ministers.
This tour also focuses on J.R.R. Tolkien, who lived and worked in Oxford for many years as a professor at the university. We will walk through the streets and colleges connected with his life and hear about the group of writers known as the Inklings, who met regularly in Oxford and included Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.
As we explore the historic centre, you will see famous colleges, medieval lanes, and beautiful architecture that inspired many scenes in Tolkien’s imagination.
There will also be time for a short walk, photographs, and a break for refreshments before we return to London.
This private tour is designed to be relaxed, informative, and flexible, and can always be adjusted according to your interests.
